Fortunoff Backyard Store: Earth Day & Sustainability

Posted by Fortunoff Backyard Store

We only have one Earth.

April 22nd is Earth Day, and to celebrate, we are talking about sustainability. We only have one Earth, and everyone must do their part to take care of it. That’s why Fortunoff Backyard Store partners with eco-conscious companies.

We also make it a point to carry products with minimal carbon footprints like our wide selection of recyclable polymer and long-lasting products like Sunbrella® cushions. Learn how we’re taking sustainable practices seriously this Earth Day and tips on how you can adopt more sustainable habits in your life.

DID YOU KNOW:

The first Earth Day was held April 22, 1970.

Shopping Sustainably

As consumers, it’s our responsibility to do our research and let our money make a difference. Certain products like fast fashion items or plastic furniture are cheap to produce and hurt the environment. Not only do these items fall apart quickly, but they’re often made in dangerous work environments by exploited people.

At Fortunoff Backyard Store, we tour every factory we partner with to ensure safe, eco-friendly practices. Plus, our teak products come from sustainable farms to minimize our environmental impact, but that’s not all we do.

Recycling

Reusing glass or aluminum products cuts down on single-use plastic, but recycling the plastic, you do use is a small habit that can make a big difference. Recycling reduces the amount of trash sent to landfills and garbage incinerators and conserves natural resources. Plus, it’s easy to get started! All you have to do is separate your aluminum, glass, and rinsed plastics.

We recommend investing in another garbage bin or picking up a recycling bin from your city. Each county is different, so always check with your City’s Helpline before buying a recycling bin. We recycle at Fortunoff Backyard Store. In fact, every resin wicker product we carry is 100% recyclable, and many of our polymer products are made from recycled materials. Some of our polymer products are even biodegradable, which brings us to our next Earth Day tip: composting.

Composting

Composting is similar to recycling, except you’re saving organic matter like leaves and food scraps and letting it decay into nutrient-rich fertilizer. Many composters will build a plot or bin, but you can find them online or use a trash bin. We carry composting bins in two different sizes and colors.

Find one that fits your needs, and start collecting those scraps. After a few months of composting, you can use the compost as fertilizer for your garden and celebrate Earth Day with some new blooms.

Planting Trees & Flowers

Adding some greenery to your outdoor space is an excellent way to celebrate Earth Day. Flowers will brighten your area, and in time, a sapling will grow to provide plenty of shade during hot months. A plant nursery will have everything you need to start, so make a day out of it.

Find the plants you want to bring home. Invest in some gloves, a trowel, a watering can or hose, and dig in. There’s only one Earth, and giving back to it as much as we take from it is what makes our actions sustainable. Together, we can make a difference.

Care for our planet.
